Satellite Radio Drills

(SATRAD)

Overview

All Non-Emergency Department hospitals have a SATRAD Rapid Deploy Kit (RDK) using the Network Innovations Satellite network and the MSAT-G2 radio platform. The SATRAD Mobile-System is configured in a modular kit that includes the transceiver and handset, tracking antenna with magnetic mount, and all cabling. The kit supports operation from either 12-volt DC or 110 AC power. The system features an integrated AC/DC power supply, a cooling fan, and a watertight shipping enclosure for all the equipment. The RDK has been designed for scenarios where SATRAD systems are shared amongst groups, moved from vehicle to vehicle, or is to be deployed to remote sites via airplane/helicopter as an emergency backup kit. These devices are tested quarterly with all SATRAD hospital users in Los Angeles County and with Orange County EMS.

All 9-1-1 receiving hospitals have two dedicated phones with satellite communication capability via ReddiNet. Status of the satellite phones is monitored 24/7 by ReddiNet representatives. Quarterly voice checks are conducted by ReddiNet representatives and facilities receive reminder emails until the voice checks have been completed. The ReddiNet dedicated satellite system also serves as a back-up in case facilities lose their hospital network to a Cyberattack or any other disaster. Additionally, in some cases, ReddiNet may be able to configure satellite equipment to enable use of other computers with the system.
