Overview
SPTCs are hospitals with enhanced capabilities and capacity to care for highly infectious diseases, such as Ebola and various other viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs). Cedars-Sinai Meical Center serves as the U.S. Dept. of HHS Region 9 federally designated, Regional Emerging Special Pathogen Treatment Center (RESPTC). These hospitals are continuously ready and available to test, assess, treat, and provide highly specialized care for HCID patients throughout their duration of illness.
There are currently 8 Special Pathogen Treatment Centers (SPTCs) within the state of California. 1 in Northern/Central CA, 4 located in Los Angeles County, and 3 in San Diego County. Each SPTC utilizes the National Special Pathogen System (NSPS) framework. The NSPS is a tiered System of Care with four facility levels (e.g., Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Level 4) that have increasing capabilities to care for suspected or confirmed patients with High Consequence Infectious Diseases (HCIDs).
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles, California) - Level 1
Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center (Los Angeles, California) - Level 2
UCLA Health, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (Los Angeles, California) - Level 2
Children's Hospital Los Angeles (Los Angeles, California) - Level 2
University of California Davis Health System (Sacramento, California) - Level 2
Sharp Memorial Hospital (San Diego, California) - Level 2
Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center (Chula Vista, California) - Level 2
Sharp Grossmont Hospital (La Mesa, California) - Level 2
Through collaboration with the National Emerging Special Pathogens Training & Education Center (NETEC) and coordination with the National Special Pathogens System (NSPS), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, California Department of Public Health, Los Angeles County Public Health, Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency, and our High-Risk Ambulance partners, Los Angeles County continues to set the standard for treatment of HCID and special pathogens in the nation.
